Historical Background

The island has a rich history, with its name believed to derive from various legends, including one about a local ruler named King Kihod. Spanish colonizers referred to it as Isla del Fuego (Island of Fire) due to the glow of fireflies that lit up the molave trees at night. Siquijor was officially established as a province in 1971 and has a unique blend of cultural influences due to its history of colonization and local traditions.

Getting around is usually done with rented scooters, although ride services are available (if spotty)
